Context

As one of the most popular operas in the canon today, Bizet’s Carmen enjoyed over 3500 professional performances worldwide across the 2017-2018 season, and countless more amateur productions. It may be surprising, then, to know that it did not achieve this popularity at its first performance. Despite a packed audience at the Opera Comique on the evening of March 3, 1875, the opera was considered too passionate for the conservative French audience.
