Remember? When you are little boy? You lie on my stomach, and I tell you story of our family. Winter of 1918. My father, Tieng-Bin, he make this family chosen by God. (Pause.) My father work in Philippine, make money. But like all oversea Chinese, he leave behind most important part of life--his three wife, his children--(Ahn begins to speak in the voice of a ten-year-old girl.)--all your Future, Papa, you left behind in China. So after three years away, you got on a steamer ship, barreling across the South China Sea, towards our home village near the port of Amoy, in the province of Fukien.
